The MDV-SEIA Board of Directors is seeking an Executive Director (ED) to carry out the organization’s mission, expand revenue opportunities, and oversee strategic legislative and regulatory campaigns. We seek an individual who will build on the strong growth of recent years, solidify MDV-SEIA as the regional voice of solar and further enhance our role in shaping energy policy. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors.

This role provides an exciting opportunity to join one of the most dynamic renewable energy industry associations in the nation, and interface with many of the most promising companies and entrepreneurs in the industry.


This is a full-time position located in downtown Washington, D.C. The Director, in partnership with members of the MDV-SEIA Board and the membership at-large, will manage operations and represent the organization when interfacing with legislators, regulators, state executive branches and other stakeholders. Ideally, the future Executive Director will lead strategy in collaboration with the Board and will guide this process.

The Director will work with and direct the MDV-SEIA staff to ensure that the Board is fully supported including research, supporting collateral materials, coordinating meetings, providing follow up and representing the association. Historically, MDV-SEIA staff consists of one full-time associate along with interns who work part-time.

The Director will lead the planning and execution of meetings and events, including the annual conference. The Director will support the Board in their duties, manage intern and FT staff and coordinate other volunteers. The Director reports to the Board and executes at their direction.

The Director is responsible for managing the MDV-SEIA annual conference in November. In support of the conference, the Director will manage MDV-SEIA staff and industry volunteers to design, manage and deliver the conference.

The Director is also responsible for managing the relationship with the national Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and other external industry partners and NGOs.


  • Draft, design, and implement legislative and regulatory campaigns related to state-level solar energy policy
  • Build support for solar policy through education, written and verbal testimony, research, op-eds, relationship building, and other means
  • Manage and provide direction on membership management/dues collection, new membership, and membership retention
  • Drive and manage strategic partnerships. Coordination and promotion of public/sponsored member meetings and Board Meetings
  • Work with Board to support the capture of new revenue opportunities
  • Represent MDV-SEIA to stakeholders, including government officials, NGOs, and other industry partners
  • Manage MDV-SEIA reporting, including accounting, tax form submission, and annual state filings
  • Oversee communications strategy; providing regular, content-rich, communications to membership
  • Direct and manage staff
  • Coordination and facilitation of MDV-SEIA volunteers
  • Advocacy: manage and direct research, analysis, white papers, marketing materials, grassroots marketing, education, and lobbying
  • Developing annual budget supporting legislative objectives

Who Should Apply

A driven, organized and committed professional with experience in renewable energy or non-profit management. The candidate is passionate about the renewable energy industry and wants to see solar win.

Candidates must have a college degree with relevant course work and will be required to provide references.

The ideal candidate will also have the following traits:

  • A demonstrated interest in renewable energy
  • A minimum of 4-5 years of professional experience. In some cases, an advanced degree may be substituted for professional experience
  • Excellent organizational skills and drive
  • Ability to retain existing revenue (dues) and capture new revenue sources, including direct outreach to members, foundations, and other revenue sources
  • Ability to manage and motivate a highly intelligent, but young intern staff
  • Ability to work in an environment where direction is provided by a part-time Board of Directors
  • Political, campaign, or legislative experience a plus
  • A sense of humor
