Power-One joins MDV-SEIA as a Silver Sponsor for the 7th annual Solar Focus Conference. MDV-SEIA is proud to partner on this event with Power-One, a longtime supporter of the organization’s efforts and an active solar stakeholder in the Mid-Atlantic. We had a chance to catch up with the Power-One’s team to learn more about the company and their thoughts on East Coast solar.
MDV-SEIA: Tell us a little bit about your company.
Power-One: Power-One has been in business over 40 years and is globally the second largest inverter company. As of July ’13, Power-One was acquired by ABB. ABB is a global company with 145,000 employees and $40B in revenue. Power-One provides PV inverter solutions for residential, commercial and utility scale PV systems.
MDV-SEIA: What markets do you operate in?
Power-One: Power-One / ABB operates in 100 countries globally.
MDV-SEIA: What opportunities do you see for distributed solar on the East Coast?
Power-One: One of Power-One’s strengths is single phase and three phase string inverters. These inverters are ideal for residential and commercial projects which are key distributed solar applications. We are seeing tremendous interest and growth in these segments on the East Coast.
MDV-SEIA: What challenges do you see?
Power-One: Distributed solar is more cost effective when deploying 1000V DC input arrays. There is slow market acceptance to 1000V systems. Although allowed by NEC, training is required within local jurisdictions to increase rate of acceptance.
MDV-SEIA: Whether East Coast or West Coast, which state/utility level programs or policies do you see as being a good model for others to follow?
Power-One: Although Power-One’s focus is product manufacturing and not project development, we would like to see more programs or policies that help speed up the cost, timeframe and viability of PV projects across the country. This includes quicker acceptance of new technologies that can result in lower cost solutions
Power-One is a member of the ABB Group. ABB is a 145,000 employee global multinational with close to $40B in annual review. With its focus on Renewable Energy and “Green” power solutions, Power-One has recently established itself as the world’s second largest provider of solar inverters. Further, as one of the world’s ten largest providers of power conversion and power management solutions, Power-One is one of the few companies with the product breadth to support every step in the refinement of utility-grade AC into the various DC voltages required to power high-availability infrastructure systems at the site, system, and semiconductor levels. In addition, we’re increasing the availability of our renewable energy solar and wind inverter products featuring industry-leading features and performance, while offering easier installation, better customer service, unmatched applications flexibility, and field-proven reliability.
