Solar Energy Services, Inc. joins MDV-SEIA as a Silver Sponsor for the 7th annual Solar Focus Conference. MDV-SEIA is proud to partner on this event with Solar Energy Services, Inc. , a longtime supporter of the organization’s efforts and an active solar stakeholder in the Mid-Atlantic. We had a chance to catch up with the Solar Energy Services, Inc. ’s team to learn more about the company and their thoughts on East Coast solar.
MDV-SEIA: Tell us a little bit about Solar Energy Services, Inc. .
Solar Energy Services, Inc. : We are a Maryland-based installation contractor with 25 employees. We install PV and solar thermal. We have a sort of niche in the commercial solar thermal space providing service to multi-family homes, dorms, and military.
MDV-SEIA: What markets do you operate in?
Solar Energy Services, Inc. : We operate in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. We are primarily throughout Maryland and DC, but we are expanding our outreach in Virginia
MDV-SEIA: What opportunities do you see for distributed solar on the East Coast?
Solar Energy Services, Inc. : There are a lot of opportunities for solar on the East Coast. There are very ambitious solar goals in a lot of the states in the East. Maryland currently has 150 megawatts of solar power, and to meet our goal we are going to multiply that by 7 to 8 times. I would say our biggest limitations right now are geographic. Virginia has a long way to go from a policy standpoint, but enormous opportunity as policy develops to promote solar. We are seeing states like Massachusetts, New York , and North Carolina installing a lot of solar so the market is definitely growing in the East.
MDV-SEIA: What challenges do you see?
Solar Energy Services, Inc. : The biggest challenges are around coordination and working with utilities as larger systems are installed. Also there are a lot of issues surrounding community solar and realistic approaches to this with utilities. However, solar is continuing to move into mainstream and getting public to see the enormous cost reductions over the 4 years and third-party ownership has helped a lot with that.
MDV-SEIA: Whether East Coast or West Coast, which state/utility level programs or policies do you see as being a good model for others to follow?
Solar Energy Services, Inc. : I’m hesitant to pick just one. I think that is the beauty of states developing policies, we can see states trying a lot of different things. A lot of it also depends on geography. Maryland for the east coast is a great model, we’re very engaged with legislature and revisit policies annually and tweak them to help state laws. I think we’re turning the corner in VA in terms of solar policies
MDV-SEIA: Thank you so much for taking some time to speak with us and sharing your insight on the solar sector. We look forward to seeing you at Solar Focus 2013.
Solar Energy Services, Inc. : I look forward to it as well.
