On Thursday, June 20, MDV-SEIA hosted a project finance workshop in conjunction with D.C. based solar finance firm, Sol Systems.
The event opened up with pizza, beer and lots of productive networking in a beautiful salon on the second floor of the National Trust for Historic Preservation building, the former residence of Andrew Mellon. After 45 minutes of schmoozing, the audience of more than 40 attendees sat down for a brief introduction by MDV-SEIA president Rick Peters and then an informative and entertaining presentation by Yuri Horwitz, MDV-SEIA board member and CEO of Sol Systems. Yuri shared lots of insights into the mechanics of project finance, including a detailed comparison of three separate projects in different states. Yuri’s presentation helped the audience to understand the many drivers in making a project financeable including some subtle ones that are often overlooked in the excitement to get a project built. Of particular interest to the audience was Yuri’s message on the challenge of financing PPAs under 500 kW and Sol System’s initiatives to create a vehicle to fill the financing void in that under-served sector.
