Standard Solar, Inc. joined MDV-SEIA as a Gold Sponsor for the 7th annual Solar Focus Conference. MDV-SEIA is proud to partner on this event with Standard Solar Inc., a longtime supporter of the organization’s efforts and an active solar stakeholder in the Mid-Atlantic. We had a chance to catch up with the Standard Solar Inc.’s team to learn more about the company and their thoughts on East Coast solar.

MDV-SEIA: What markets do you operate in?
Standard Solar, Inc.: Standard Solar develops, engineers, finances and installs solar projects throughout the nation while Standard Energy Solutions is focused in the Mid-Atlantic region.
MDV-SEIA: What opportunities do you see for distributed solar on the East Coast?
Standard Solar, Inc.: Energy storage systems coupled with solar PV are now of significant value. The ability to maintain a reliable clean energy source during a grid outage as well as permit greater penetration of variable renewable energy resources onto the grid will be essential for further development of solar PV. Microgrids are expected to become increasingly common in the United States. The increasing frequency of grid outages, especially as a result of catastrophic weather events like Hurricane Sandy, is the main driver in the rush to the develop microgrids.
MDV-SEIA: What challenges do you see?
Standard Solar, Inc.: One of the biggest challenges that the solar PV industry currently faces is the ability to lower soft costs in order for us to get closer to grid parity. PV companies still need to scale up to profitably manufacture PV hardware and install PV systems at prices that will successfully compete with grid-supplied power. Historically the industry has focused on promoting policies that provided incentives to reduce the cost of systems for end customers.
An emerging industry challenge is to fully integrate PV with the grid. Energy storage will be the key to this effort in the coming years as our country struggles to deal with increasing energy demand and the needed development of the smart grid.
MDV-SEIA: Whether east Coast or West Coast, which state/utility level programs or policies do you see as being a good model for others to follow?
Standard Solar, Inc.: The state of Maryland is definitely a good model for other states to follow. The state has done much with grant support and has really made great strides in solar development.
